Wiggins Teape Paper Ltd
Client
Wiggins Teape Paper Ltd, Birmingham Depot. This is one of
six warehouse and distribution facilities used for the distribution
of Wiggins Teape's products.
Problem
Wiggins Teape's Birmingham depot were having problems running
their warehouse to the tight budgets set by head office.
They already had terminals linked to the their mainframe
computer for accounts and ordering. However this system
did not address their local need to monitor and improve
their transport and warehouse personnel time keeping, productivity,
and costs. Also the cost of running their fleet of trucks
needed to be watched, as did their use of outside transport.
Solution
Tailor Made Software wrote a comprehensive Management
Information System program for running on a small IBM PC.
This enables the managers to know exactly how the plant
is operating, and to be aware of the changing business conditions
as soon as they happen. The program incorporates the following
key features:
Daily
analysis by the program of employee productivity and error
rates.
Analysis
of costs for Wiggins Teape Paper's delivery operation, and
comparison with use of outside carriers.
Detailed
analysis of costs and utilisation for Wiggins Teape Paper's
internal trunking operation, for shifting stock between
their warehouses.
Timely
tracking and analysis of departmental spending, and comparison
with the budgeted figures.
Over
100 analysis reports and graphs are produced by the program.
Every month these are bound into a book which is used as
the definitive statement of the depot's trading position
and efficiency.
Result
The Birmingham depot is now the best organised and
most efficient in the company. Wiggins Teape Paper head
office has decided that similar systems should be installed
in their other distribution depots.
